Ricardo turned professional in 1986 having formely been a caddie in his native Argentina. He played professionally in South America and Africa, eventually securing his European Tour card in 1999 after finishing 5th on the Challenge Tour in the previous year. His first win on the European Tour was in 2001 when he won the Omega Masters having led from start to finish. He went on to win the Telefonica Open de Madrid in 2003 and the following spring he won the Open de Sevilla carrying on his success in Spanish tournaments

During the next 5 years Ricardo played well and retained his card each year but there were no wins until July 2009 when he won the SAS Masters at Barseback Golf and Country Club, Malmo, Sweden. Ironically, as Ricardo is known as one of the longest hitters on the Tour, this course was the longest ever played in european Tour history! Ricardo had 5 birdies in the last 6 holes, the last two of them will be remembered for a long time! On the 459 yard 17th his second shot was plugged in the greenside bunker, however, he holed a magnificent bunker shot for birdie. On the 437 yard 18th he hooked his drive into the trees and was left with what looked an impossible shot to the green. There was a nine foot gap between the trees and somehow he hit the most splendid 9 iron to within 5 feet of the pin and claimed another birdie and a 2 shot victory! A great comeback for one of the most popular characters on Tour!
